ALLEY TO HEAVEN

For ‘A World of Islands’, ‘Alley to Heaven’ (2023) explores a future where three nonhuman agents communicate through intermediaries, embodied as VTuber Avatars on an artificial island setting based in the South China Sea / West Philippine Sea.
In the film you are a visiting “intelligence technician” tasked with recalibrating these early-generation mascot-intelligences through a series of interviews. While they have been designed to respond to visitors’ questions about the islands’ ecosystem, history, and sovereignty, they have a tendency to veer off-script into conjecture, hallucination, or sentimentality.

Commissioned for New Worlds, an experimental series curated by Alice Bucknell at Somerset House Studios. The performances merge magic and technology to explore the interconnected topics of sound and ritual, myth-making, non-linear storytelling, ecological futures, and more-than-human narratives.
